Your Gifts Helped the Homeless This Year!
Wednesday, December 02, 2009

Any homeless resident who came to the Shreveport-Bossier Rescue Mission in the past year can tell you what a blessing your giving has meant to them. A hot meal, a clean bed, clothes to wear, and people who care — these things have made a tremendous difference in over 1,200 lives this past year. Often it has been a turning point.

“I am really grateful to the Rescue Mission for providing a safe place for me and my children, and for bringing God into my life,” said Avon Simmons, who is here with three of her seven children. A stay-at-home mother for years, she has earned her GED and Certified Nurse’s Aide certification from Louisiana Technical College while residing at the Mission.

Over 1,200 men, women and children received shelter, food, and other services during the past fiscal year. The shelter served over 104,000 meals.

Donors contribute 68 percent of the Rescue Mission’s $2.1 million annual budget. During this past year, the organization’s Thrift Store at 6800 Mansfield Road provided much needed support as well, supplying 18 percent of the operating budget.

“The support we receive from individuals, churches, businesses, and organizations is critical,” said Rev. Henry Martin, executive director. “This ministry cannot accomplish anything without our donors. They are our lifeblood.”
