David’s addiction started at a young age. When he was in 3rd grade, he was diagnosed with a learning disability and was placed in special ed classes. David was bullied by his peers and at age 14, he started using drugs as a means to fit in. “I don’t know how to explain this, but I ended up with a great hatred for the whole world.”

David’s addiction only grew as the years went on. After 35 years of using, he lost his job of 17 years. “I was a functioning addict but over the years, it finally caught up to me.” Six months later, David lost his mother to cancer.

After the death of his mother David went to live with his father. He continued to use drugs. His addiction and anger only further alienated his family. After his father passed, David found himself homeless, deeper in his addiction, and living on the streets.

David struggled with anger. “I ended up with a great hatred for the whole world. I burned all my bridges. I had rage episodes.” David had lost all hope until eventually the police brought him to the Mission. It was then that he experienced a miracle. David found a friend at the Mission that encouraged him to join our long term program. He finally took his advice and now David’s life has changed. David graduated both our New Beginnings Program, Ministry Intern Program, and now works for the Mission. “I went from hating people to being able to connect with them. God changed my heart and love for people!”
